The Operation Westbridge team at the British High Commission have adopted the Accra Senior Boys Correctional Centre (Borstal Institute) for its local campaign ‘’Kick Drugs, Play Sports’.At an official ceremony to adopt the centre, the Westbridge team donated some sports items including football jerseys, baseball caps, key rings, pin badges and cricket sets which were sourced from the English Football Association and the England Cricket Board.Presenting the items, the Deputy British High Commissioner, Caron Rohsler, thanked Operation Westbridge for the campaign which is aimed at encouraging inmates to concentrate on sports and keep away from drugs and crime. She urged the children to reform and be of good behaviour.The team leader of Operation Westbridge, Subhash Raja said the ‘Kick Drugs, Play Sports’ campaign begun in 2007 and has since benefitted several schools and charities.He stressed it was their first donation to the Borstal Institute and the beginning of many more such donations as Westbridge wants to build and develop a relationship with the Institute to help in reforming the children.Launched in November 2006 in Ghana, Operation Westbridge is a joint operation between Ghana and the UK to tackle drug trafficking. It is built on the on the success of a similar initiative, Operation Airbridge, in Jamaica which focused on catching drugs couriers with internal concealments of Class A drugs before they boarded planes from Jamaica.
