Collation of ballots is underway in the Ablekuma North constituency following the close of polls in Friday’s parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations.
The Electoral Commission had targeted over 6,000 eligible voters to complete the constituency’s long-delayed election process, but the day was marred by violent scenes at some centres.

While voting began peacefully at 7:00 a.m. in most locations, chaos erupted at the Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where a group of men attacked voters and party officials, including former MP Hawa Koomson. Voting was briefly halted but later resumed.

In a separate incident, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, a journalist with the EIB Network (GHOne TV and Starr FM), was assaulted by a police officer, while a JoyNews reporter of The Multimedia Group, Salomey Martey, was assaulted by a hoodlum.

The Ghana Journalists Association condemned the attack, describing it as “an affront to press freedom and Ghana’s democracy.”
Despite the tension, most centres saw orderly voting under tight security. The rerun follows a legal tussle over incomplete collation in the December 2024 polls.
