The Board of Directors of GBCHealth, the only organization dedicated solely to mobilizing business for a healthier world, unanimously elected Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede (Aig) the organization’s co-Chairman, effective June 3. He will succeed Sir Mark-Moody-Stuart who stepped down after completing more than four years as Chairman and two as co-Chairman. Moody-Stuart will remain active with GBCHealth as a member of its Corporate Advisory Board. Aig-Imoukhuede is the Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank in Nigeria and one of the region’s most prominent business leaders. In his GBCHealth assignment, Aig-Imoukhuede becomes the first African to lead GBCHealth and joins Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent who serves as the organization’s US co-Chairman. “Aig has demonstrated great leadership and acumen in building Access Bank,” says Moody-Stuart. “But he has also found time to demonstrate true leadership on global health. I feel very confident handing over the GBCHealth reigns to Aig.” In 2010, Aig-Imoukhuede launched the “Gift from Africa” campaign, a first-of-its-kind initiative among African businesses which has so far raised several millions of US Dollars from African corporations in support of the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. Aig-Imoukhuede assumes leadership at GBCHealth as the organization broadens its mandate from fighting the three major infectious disease pandemics to a comprehensive global health mandate. This shift is meant to increase the scope and effectiveness of corporate engagement on strategic public health challenges around the world. “Aig represents the best of Africa and I look forward to working closely with him to take our organization to the next level,” said GBCHealth’s President and CEO, John Tedstrom. “Mark has been an incredibly important leader for us; I can’t think of anyone who can pick up where he leaves off with the focus, energy and commitment that Aig has.” “It is an honour to accept these new responsibilities at GBCHealth,” said Aig-Imoukhuede. “My colleagues on the Board, and the management and staff of GBCHealth have done a fine job of repositioning the organization for greater impact through strong growth and skillful execution. I intend to do all I can to support and accelerate positive change for GBCHealth, our member companies and the employees and communities their health programs serve. Aigboje’s appointment as co-Chair of GBC Health is consistent with his profile and reputation as an ardent advocate on issues of responsible business practices, good corporate citizenship and sustainability. He presently serves as the Chairman of Friends of the Global Funds Africa, an institution that focuses on the eradication of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and also serves as a member of the Private Sector Delegation Advisory Group to the Board of the Global Fund. He has demonstrated commitment to responsible business practice by leading Access Bank to become the first African private sector company to invest in the Global Fund programme under the organization’s collaboration with African private sector in the fight against the triple pandemic of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria with a donation of USD1,000,000. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede will serve alongside Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, the Coca-Cola Company as co-Chairs of GBC-Health Board. GBCHealth GBCHealth is a global coalition of over 200 private sector companies and top NGOs leading the business fight for improved global health. GBCHealth supports members by developing comprehensive workplace policies; supporting community programs; leveraging core competencies; facilitating leadership and advocacy by business leaders; and brokering partnerships. GBCHealth also manages the private sector delegation to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, serving as an entry-point for corporate collaboration and engagement with the Fund and its recipients worldwide. GBCHealth has offices in New York, Johannesburg, Beijing, Nairobi and Moscow.
