The Ghana Weightlifting Federation has officially launched the 2025 Africa Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship, scheduled to take place from August 17 to 22, 2025, at the Ga Mashie Hall inside the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra.
The championship is expected to attract over 300 athletes and officials from more than 20 African countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and host nation Ghana.
President of the Federation, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, stated, “Virtually, we are ready. We’ve had some support from the Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Sports and Recreation. We’ve also had some support, in fact, in the form of collaboration from the National Sports Authority.”
He added, “We’re hoping to get more support as in the form of cash and kind. And we are looking at about a million cedis to have this competition.”
“As of the close of preliminary entries, the Ghana Weightlifting Federation also confirmed receiving interest from over 20 countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and host nation Ghana.
The final list of participating countries is expected to be confirmed by July 17,” he told the press.
While the event will not serve as a qualifier for the Olympic Games, the Federation believes it will provide a valuable platform for young weightlifters to showcase their talent and potential on the continental stage.
