The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Seth Acheampong have endorsed the decision by the University of Ghana to toll their roads.
They described the decision by the University authorities to collect tolls from motorists making entry into the campus as a positive move. The two men were speaking on the "Badwam" programme on Adom TV, Wednesday.
The authorities of the University of Ghana started charging between Gh¢1, Gh¢2 and Gh¢3 from private, commercial vehicles and trucks respectively, effective Saturday, February 1. The institution says the tolls will be used to repay a loan contracted from a bank to refurbish roads within the campus.
Two students of the University have filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the action by the university.
The authorities on Monday, however, reviewed the tolling system after a meeting with the Students Representative Council (SRC) making it possible for students to access the University without paying road tolls.
But Mr. Ade Coker says it is time Ghanaians learnt to pay for the services rendered them rather than looking up for freebies which according to him, will hinder the country’s development.
Similarly, Mr Seth Acheampong commended the University for embarking on massive developmental projects on campus adding that such projects should not be enjoyed for free.
