Rugby Africa has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry on her historic election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Coventry’s election marks a groundbreaking moment, as she becomes the first female and first African to hold the prestigious position.
Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, praised Coventry’s integrity, resilience, and remarkable achievements. "I’ve witnessed openness, honesty, and a deep sense of integrity from Kirsty. It was only a matter of time before she ascended to the highest office. I can say without hesitation that Africa salutes you, Kirsty, for being the first African to reach such an honour," he said.
"Africa needs its heroes and heroines, and it’s moments like this when people like Kirsty rise to the occasion, offering hope to others. Kirsty epitomises the resilience and success of her homeland, Zimbabwe — a country whose people have endured countless hardships. Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe has consistently produced extraordinary talent, and Kirsty is a shining example of that success. Africa is proud of you, Kirsty, and certainly so am I," Herbert Mensah added.
Kirsty Coventry was elected on Thursday, 20th March, for an eight-year term as IOC President. She currently serves as an IOC Member and as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation.
A native of Harare, Coventry competed in five Olympic Games between Sydney 2000 and Rio 2016. During her illustrious career, she won seven Olympic medals — two gold, four silver, and one bronze. She claimed gold in the 200m backstroke at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. Coventry remains the most decorated African Olympian of all time.
Rugby Africa expressed confidence in Coventry’s leadership and vision, noting that her election would inspire the growth of sport across the continent.
Herbert said Rubgy Africa looks forward to working with her to further the Olympic movement and promote sporting excellence in Africa.
