The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games have agreed to pay volunteers for the competition an allowance of GHS 1,000.00 following agitations over unpaid stipends.
The decision to pay the volunteers an allowance comes following their protest after the end of the games in Accra.
The volunteers were engaged in a dispute with officials over their allowances. Over 1,000 people availed themselves to serve as volunteers for the organisation of the continental event.
However, four days after the end of the Games, the volunteers were asked to depart from their lodges with no financial reward prompting a protest which was later resolved.
In the latest development, the LOC has now agreed to hand financial packages to the volunteers with each person expected to receive GHS 1,000.00 in addition to a GHS 200.00 travel and transport package.
The communique from the LOC adds that volunteers have until Monday, April 8, to validate their statuses before payment is made.
