President Nana Akufo-Addo has cautioned Ghanaians against the proliferation of fake news in the run-up to the December polls.
Highlighting the potential of fake news to incite unrest during elections, he emphasised the critical need to reject such misinformation so as to maintain national unity and peace.
During this year's Eid celebrations at the Black Star Square in Accra, he said, "In election years, there is a tendency for certain individuals to exploit our religious and ethnic differences to sow division and advance narrow political agendas."
He, therefore, urged citizens to refrain from endorsing or spreading fake news, warning against the harmful consequences of its dissemination, particularly in damaging the reputations of individuals.
Quoting Quran chapter 49 verse 6, the President encouraged Muslims to adhere to the principle of verifying news before accepting it, stating, "Oh you who believe when an evil person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you have people in ignorance and afterwards, become regretful of what you have done."
