A Western Regional executive of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the desperate new region promise by the opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo will not change the dwindling fortunes of the NPP in the region.
Joseph Nelson, the General Secretary of the party in the region says residents in the Western part of Ghana need no new region and do not expect one to be created by any government, at least for now.
He was responding to the NPP campaign promise to create the Western North, a new region to ensure effective management of the resources.
Nana Akufo-Addo had early on promised that the new region, when created, will help people in the Western Region to benefit from the resources they are richly endowed with.
But Joseph Nelson told Joy News Editor Dzifa Bampoh the promise of a new region is unnecessary.
He said "the fortunes of the NPP is waning badly. They have eight out of 26 constituencies in the region. Nana will do and say anything to shore up the NPP votes," he indicated.
"But creating a new region is nothing the residents are expecting," he added.
Joseph Nelson made the comments on day one of the president's visit to the Western Region to begin a campaign tour.
He applauded the Mahama administration for a lot of development projects he said had been undertaken in the region.
The achievements notwithstanding, Mr Nelson mentioned some roads which he said needed to be brought up to scratch by the government.
He said the residents are expecting the government to deliver on those promises.
