The ancient town of Elmina in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) District of the Central Region was on Friday thrown into a state of jubilation when the former Minister of Trade, Industry and President’s Special Initiative (PSI), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, alias Alan Cash, stormed the town to join them at a durbar to climax their annual Bakatue Festival. The arrival of the former minister drew hundreds of people to the grounds amidst drumming and dancing while shouting, “Alan, this is your time”, “2012 is for you”, “You are the next president of this country”, and “We people of Elmina are solidly behind you”. He had a hectic time passing through the crowd before he could exchange greetings with the chiefs. Beaming with smiles, he waved at the teeming crowd that had gathered to cheer him up. The electrified atmosphere was a sign that the people of Elmina and its environs are ready to vote back the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to power, a situation which made the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Rev Mrs Veronica Essuman Nelson, felt disowned. Addressing the durbar, the Paramount Chief of the area, Nana Kojo Conduah appealed to the various district assemblies to enforce bye-laws that prevent people from building on waterways. He observed that the floods being experienced by the country were mostly as a result of structures that had been constructed along waterways, preventing the free flow of water whenever it rains. Nana Conduah emphasized the need for the government to ensure the construction of a fishing habour at Elmina to boost the economic activities of people in the fishing communities. “Ghana can never talk of good fishing industry without mentioning Elmina; so try and implement the plan that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government drew for the construction of our fishing harbour for us,” he added. The Paramount Chief further appealed to citizens of the area to contribute their quota towards the completion of the palace, which is about 53 percent complete. The Municipal Chief Executive of KEEA, Rev Mrs Veronica Essuman Nelson promised the government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of premix fuel at various fishing communities in the country. Rev Nelson emphasized the need for parents to send their children to school since education is the bedrock of every nation’s development. She therefore advised the youth not to use the festive season to engage in vices such as alcoholism and premarital sex which can destroy their future. Source: Daily Guide
