Ghana’s hopes for medals in the ongoing All Africa Games in Maputo were boosted as three of the male sprinters qualified for the semifinal of the 100m race.
Three times All Africa Games gold medalist Aziz Zakari led the pack as he finished second in his heat with a time of 10:55ss. The two other sprinters to join Zakari in the semis were UK based Timothy Abeyie and Emmanuel Appiah Kubi. Both sprinters clocked 10:55ss to book their place in the semis.
In an interview with Asempa Fm’s correspondent at the Games, Gideon Okyere Anim, Timothy Abeyie stated he was extremely happy running for Ghana. Timothy Abeyie who ran with an injury, hopes to do much better in the semis.
Meanwhile, Vida Anim has also qualified for the 100m final scheduled later on Monday. Two of her compatriots Beatrice Gyaman and Flings Owusu Agyapong failed to qualify for the finals.
Elsewhere, US based Hammer thrower Linda Bennie, says she is well prepared for Monday’s challenge in the hammer throw event. When asked if she was under any pressure she said there was no pressure on her even though this was her first time competing for Ghana.
In other events, the disappointing run of the women netball team continued as they lost 91-20 to Botswana. The embarrassing run of the team has been attributed to lack of knowledge in the rules of the game.
The technical handlers of the team are hoping for image redemption as they take on Uganda in their sixth match later on Monday.
