The management of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital is calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to construct a rehabilitation center for mental patients in the Metropolis.
Authorities say the centre, could offer skills training in carpentry, masonry, art and crafts and other vocational skills which would enable them to make a living for themselves after they have been cured.
Speaking on Asempa FM in Accra on Thursday, the National Coordinator for Psychiatric Patients at the Ghana Health Service, Amina Bukari said this would also help create jobs for treated patients.
She says the AMA must also consider creating recreation centres in the city where people could go and de-stress since stress can also lead to mental disorders.
“Stress is killing lots of Ghanaians and if there can be a system where people can go and distress, most mental cases can be eliminated,” she said.
Commenting on the repatriation of 30 cured inmates to their various families and how the families received them, Madam Bukari revealed that most families received their cured patients with joy, but urged the families not to stigmatize them.
