The Deputy Minority leader in Parliament, Ambrose P Dery has called on chiefs in the country to work assiduously to eradicate socio-cultural practices that militate against the well-being of women in society.He made the statement in Lawra during a ceremony to donate two ambulances to the Lawra and Nandom hospitals.The two ambulances which were funded by the Member of Parliament cost sixty-four thousand Ghana cedis (64,000).Hon. Ambrose Dery mentioned some of the practices as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), discrimination against women when it comes to nutrition in the homes.He said the time when the best part of the meal is given to the man should stop but rather given to the mother and children.‘‘If you don’t give the mother good nutrition, there is the likelihood that our children will be born with mental retardation, then we send them to school and your are wondering why they are not first when we don’t play our roles’’, he added.The Lawra-Nandom Member of Parliament appealed to the two hospitals to maintain the two ambulances to deliver good health care to the people.‘‘I will also be prepared to assist you with some of my funding to ensure that we carry patients who cannot afford the service of the ambulance so that we don’t go when pregnant women are in labour and we say bring us the money or we don’t pick you’’.He concluded by calling on President Mills to make good his promise of constructing a regional hospital for the Upper West which sod was cut 15 months ago.The paramount chief of the Lawra Traditional Area, Naa Puowelle Karbo III who chaired the function was very grateful to the MP for the donation.He called on the Lawra District Assembly to make the roads in the district very accessible to enable the people have access to good quality health care.
