Some traditional leaders from the Central Region showed up in court on Thursday, June 27, to support Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako Eyiam-Essiam Constituency in the Central Region, and the Minority Leader in Ghana's Parliament.
The MP and former Deputy Finance Minister is standing trial for allegedly causing financial loss to the state over the procurement of some ambulances.
The show of solidarity from the chiefs appears to underscore the importance of the case to his constituents and by extension the people of the Central Region, highlighting the influential role that traditional leaders continue to play in Ghanaian society.
The chiefs, dressed in their regalia drew considerable attention from the public and the media as they entered the courtroom.
Dr Ato Forson, who is being prosecuted for alleged financial malfeasance related to the procurement of ambulances during his tenure as a Deputy Finance Minister, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
He has argued that the charges against him are politically motivated and has vowed to vigorously defend himself in court.
The case has generated significant public interest, with many Ghanaians closely following the developments.
Thursday's trial is a continuation of the cross-examination of the third accused person in the case, Richard Jakpa by the prosecution.
