Founder of the defunct UT Bank, Captain (Rtd) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, says he is not actively seeking any position in a Mahama-led government but would not outrightly reject an offer to serve if the circumstances are right.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, the former CEO of UT Holdings, reacted to suggestions that government could tap into his experience through a public appointment.
“I’m not really out to get a position,” he said. “I’ll be 74 next month. I resigned from the company that I built when I was 63.”
The comments come against the background of renewed public debate about his role in national life following the collapse of UT Bank in 2017 and the years he has spent largely out of public office since.
His recent media engagements have reignited debate over whether he can still contribute to public service.
When host Emefa Adeti suggested that the government might want to draw on his wealth of experience, Mr Amoabeng said he would not immediately turn down such an approach.
“I will not say no,” he said, but stressed that any engagement would require serious discussion.
“We’ll have to discuss why me and what the government believes I can bring to the table,” he said.
He also emphasised the need for commitment and clarity, making it clear he would not accept a role he could not fully dedicate himself to.
“I must have the time for it,” he said. “I’m not going to do things that I’m going to do half-half. I don’t do that.”
Mr Amoabeng suggested that the timing and framing of the question itself mattered.
“Your question at this stage may be inappropriate, for lack of a better word,” he said.
Still, he said, public service, when properly defined, remains a worthy calling.
“But of course, anything that I think will be in line with serving the people and serving the world, because we are in this world only to make the world a better place,” he said.
For him, the guiding principle would be impact rather than position.
“So any opportunity that comes that will mean that your world has been expanded and your impact is more, you should do it,” he added.
