After successfully delivering on its promise with the commissioning and handover of a 9-unit classroom block at Sanso to the Ghana Education Service (GES), AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is poised to make history once again.
The mining giant is set to construct a 24-unit classroom block at the Obuasi Cluster of Schools, a project that is expected to become one of the largest and most modern public basic school facilities in the country.
At a brief ceremony to cut the sod for the commencement of construction, the Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr Edmund Oduro Agyei, stated that the project aligns with the Mine’s purpose statement: “Mining to empower people and advance societies.”

He emphasised that the initiative also fulfils AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment under its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) to enhance access to quality education in its host communities.
The two-storey, 24-unit classroom block, to be built at the Obuasi Cluster of Schools, is designed to address infrastructural deficits within the basic education sector by providing a safe, functional, and conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
Key Features of the Project
The facility will include:
• 4 sick bays (2 male, 2 female)
• 2 head teachers’ offices (Head and Assistant)
• 2 additional offices
• 2 large staff common rooms
• 2 kitchenettes
• 1 ICT laboratory
• 1 library
• 1 general assembly hall
• 1 cafeteria (canteen)
• 8 washroom blocks (4 male, 4 female) with a total of 24 water closet toilet facilities
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Mr George Alfred Koomson, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its continuous commitment to improving access to quality education in the municipality. He highlighted the company’s significant contributions, including the provision of educational infrastructure, learning materials, and teacher capacity-building programmes.

“We have witnessed a remarkable improvement in education in Obuasi, thanks to the invaluable contributions of AngloGold Ashanti. This 24-unit classroom block further demonstrates their unwavering dedication to providing a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning,” he noted.
As part of AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to promoting local economic growth and empowering local contractors, two Obuasi-based firms, Kilon Company Ltd. and Erok Ghana Ltd., have been awarded the contract to execute the project within 16 months.
