There is growing concern about the low voter turnout for the district-level elections, a situation that the Minister for Local Government, Dan Botwe lamented about in Parliament a few days ago.
Joy News’ Sweety Aborchie in an interview with some district members gathered that the apathy towards the district-level elections is due to non-performance on the side of assembly members.
One of the members said “it’s always a repetition. You vote one into power and they don’t do anything until the next elections and the next person is voted into power. There is no use in voting for them."
The connection between the elections and the consistent disappointment of citizens in their local leaders seems to be a clear factor causing apathy towards the local government elections.
However, the Electoral Commission and the Minister for Local Government are appealing to both citizens and leaders to help rectify the situation.
This district-level election expected to come off on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, will see the selection of assembly representatives.
The election will begin at 7 am and end at 5 pm at the various district election centres.
