Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has called for intensification of family planning education, to reduce the strain on both family and national economic resources. He noted that population explosion through uncontrolled child-birth could wreck the economy and stall the country's development. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made the call when the President of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Dr. Jacqueline Sharpe, paid a courtesy call on him at his Manhyia Palace. The Asantehene asked Ghanaians to take reproductive health education seriously and ensure that they do not worsen their economic situation by having many children. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pledged to support the PPAG in its family planning campaign. The Asantehene said the Afua Kobi Serwaah Ampem Foudation, set up to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and support orphans, would support family planning programmes. Dr. Sharpe said given the dwindling financial support for PPAG by IPPF, it was necessary for government to collaborate with other agencies to provide it with alternative source of funding. Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University and Technology, Professor William Otoo Ellis praised IPPF for educating the youth on reproductive health. Dr. Frances Owusu-Daaku, immediate past President of the Association, appealed for more resources from government to enable it work to reduce maternal mortality, help the youth to make informed sexual choices and to reduce sexually transmitted infections.
