The Ashanti Caucus of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament has thrown its weight behind the regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his conviction and 20-year prison sentence in an illegal mining case.

In a statement issued on Monday, the caucus expressed "unwavering solidarity" with Chairman Wontumi, describing him as a fearless and selfless leader whose contributions to the growth of the NPP cannot be diminished by the court's decision.

"Chairman Wontumi has, over the years, distinguished himself as a fearless, resilient, and selfless leader whose sacrifices and commitment have significantly strengthened the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana," the statement said.

Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted by the High Court in connection with illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Limited.

While reaffirming its respect for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, the caucus said it remains confident that the appellate process would overturn the conviction.

The MPs noted that every Ghanaian has a constitutional right to challenge judicial decisions and insisted that the judgment should not be regarded as the end of Wontumi's political career.

"We reject every attempt to portray this judgment as the end of Chairman Wontumi's public and political life. If anything, this moment should strengthen the resolve of every patriotic member of our Party to rally behind a man who has consistently stood firmly for the ideals of the NPP," the statement added.

The caucus also raised concerns over what it described as a growing perception of selective justice in the country's anti-illegal mining campaign.

According to the MPs, the fight against illegality must be conducted fairly and without political considerations, warning against using the justice system to settle political scores.

"The fight against illegality must be fair, impartial, and devoid of political considerations. Justice must never become an instrument for settling political scores or intimidating political opponents," the statement said.

The Ashanti Caucus further appealed to NPP supporters, particularly those in the Ashanti Region, to remain calm and united while the party pursues an appeal against the judgment.

It assured Chairman Wontumi that he would not face the legal battle alone.

"Stay strong. Stay resolute. The Ashanti Caucus stands firmly with you. This battle is not yours alone; it is a test of our collective commitment to justice, fairness, and democratic principles," the statement concluded.
