The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to party supporters in the region to explore laid down procedure to seek redress to their grievances. Robert Yaw Amankwaah is unhappy that aggrieved supporters in the party’s stronghold have been resorting to the court with their concerns at the least opportunity. According to him, such tendencies cost the party in last year’s elections and pose a threat to NPP’S quest to present a formidable front to recapture power in 2012. Elections in the Bantama and Suame constituencies are on hold following court orders after some aggrieved supporters filed for injunctions. There are fears some supporters in the Ashanti Akyem North and Fomena constituencies may follow suit. Mr Amankwaa anticipates supporters who will not be favoured by regulations on the conduct of the elections would go to court. He however says, the party has measures in place for the smooth running of the process. “If we continue to wash our dirty linen in public, then it will affect the party negatively. In my few years as regional chairman, I have witnessed so many court cases brought against the party by supporters. But the same cannot be said about the NDC,” he said. “NPP supporters should learn to be patient and have trust in the party structures. They must understand the party is bigger than any individual. It is useless for us to struggle in opposition. We lost the 2008 as a result of similar developments.” Mr Amankwaa attaches the importance the party attaches to the constituency elections and warned sanctions would be brought against party members and executives who hijack the process in their favour. According to him, the regional secretariat would respect the court order regarding constituencies where injunctions have been granted.
