A former member of the Council of State in the Kufuor Government, Mr. Francis Asianab Afoko, has died.
He was 89.
Mr Afoko, who was the father of the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, died in Tamale Monday dawn.
He was buried at his home in Sandema in the Builsa District of the Upper East Region later that day.
The burial was done in accordance with the traditions of his royal lineage.
Mr. Asianab Afoko, until his death was the head of the Afoko Royal Family – one of four families – Afoko, Ayietta, Abakisi and Anankum – who ascend to the paramountcy of the Builsa Traditional chiefdom.
Mr Afoko was elected to represent the Upper East Region on the Council of State in 2001.
He was re-elected in 2005 and, therefore, served two terms on the Council which was responsible for advising President John Agyekum Kufuor on important national issues.
He was believed to be one of the close confidantes of Mr Kufuor.
He was a Businessman and held Standard Seven Certificate from Prof. Diploma Police College, Cairo Egypt.
