The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the police to investigate text messages containing apparent death threats that it claims may have been sent by Manhyia MP and opposition party member Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to Food and Drugs Board CEO Dr. Stephen Opuni.
John Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC who disclosed the contents of the text message at a press conference in Kumasi, said that if the matter were not dealt with, it would compromise the safety of Ghanaians during the upcoming elections.
The text message, as read by Mr. Asiedu Nketia, stated: “Boss we all have one life. If your plans have extended to take mine, then watch out. We will speak at my press conference tomorrow and we will see. All those guns and men and combats boots and those picking them up will be exposed tomorrow. It is not only Kumasi that will be unsafe. So will your house and hometowns, and families and hiding place will go overboard. I have reported this to the police.”
According to Nketia, Opoku Prempeh sent another text message to Dr. Opuni after being arrested last week in connection with violence in Ashtown. That text message, according to the NDC scribe, read, "Good evening, if John Mahama wants to become president through our blood then he is a joker. Wait till I speak to the press tomorrow. He sanctioned this Ohene Agyekum-Opuni’s stupidity on my life”.
Nana Yaw Osei, Opoku Prempeh’s lawyer, admitted that the text messages were sent by his client but was quick to add that his client was only responding to an alleged attempt on his life by Dr. Stephen Opuni.
He said it would be disingenuous for Opuni to act as though Opoku Prempeh’s messages exist in a vacuum because four months ago, Opuni participated in a clandestine meeting to discuss the assassination of Opoku Prempeh.
