Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Mawutor Avoke, has stormed the university reinstating himself as vice-chancellor Tuesday afternoon.
He was accompanied by some staff who had also been dismissed by the university.
According to Prof Avoke, his decision followed his clearance by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after he was indicted for abusing his office.
“EOCO after a thorough probe concluded in black and white that we did not abuse our office or were involved in any procurement breaches. We are back to take over our respective offices and right place in the school,” Prof Avoke said.
Prof. Avoke and the five dismissed staff held a press conference in the Council Chamber of the university to make their point clear.
Personnel from the Ghana Police have taken over the school to restore calm.
Video: Prof. Avoke addressed the media outside the university campus after police intervention This comes just hours after the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of the university filed an application at the high court demanding Prov. Avoke’s reinstatement as Vice-Chancellor.Kingsley Amoakwah wants the court for an order restraining Prof. Afful-Broni from holding himself as the Vice-Chancellor or performing any such functions in that capacity of UEW.
He also wants an order preventing Prof. Afful-Broni from “continuously interfering in the administration of Prof. Mawutor Avoke,” whom he claims is the legitimate Vice-Chancellor of the University.
“An order restraining Prof. Afful-Broni, his assigns, agents, or any person claiming through him from walking or driving within the precincts of the Main Administration Block of UEW, where Prof. Avoke’s office is located,” a copy of the application sighted by Joy News said.
President of UEW chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Kaakyire Duku is in support of Prof. Avoke’s move.
He insists the ousted Vice-Chancellor is the legitimate head of the university and wants Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni to vacate the office and allow him to work.
“He is going to take his lawful position as the VC of the university. Individuals are intentionally preventing him from occupying his office and he believes that justice must prevail,” Mr Duku who accompanied the ousted Vice-Chancellor to the university campus Tuesday said on Joy FM’s Top Story.
