The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Ghana Prisons Service and in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, has commenced construction of a fully-fledged elementary school in Kasoa, the Awutu Senya East Municipality.

The project was officially launched at a sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 5, 2026, bringing together traditional leaders, the Awutu Senya East MP, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor; the Municipal Chief Executive, Seth Sabath Serwornoo-Banini; education stakeholders; officers of the Ghana Prisons Service; and members of the community.

The ceremony opened with prayers and the pouring of libation by a traditional leader to invoke blessings for the successful execution of the project.
In his welcome address, the Municipal Chief Executive described the project as a major step toward addressing the growing educational needs of the rapidly expanding Kasoa community.

He added that, when completed, the facility would be managed by trained officers of the Ghana Prisons Service.
Director of Prisons in charge of Operations, Benedict Bob-Dery, attributed the initiative to the leadership of the Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie.
He explained that the project forms part of the Service’s “Think Prisons 360 Degrees Initiative,” which aims to strengthen partnerships with communities and contribute to national development.

He also expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their support in bringing the project to fruition.
The Municipal Education Director noted that the rapid population growth in Kasoa has not been matched by adequate infrastructure, such as schools, markets, and health facilities.
He said the new school would help bridge the gap in educational infrastructure within the municipality.

A traditional leader also commended the initiative and called for sustained investment in education to meet the demands of the area’s growing population.
The Municipal Engineer, who provided a technical briefing, said the project would include a two-unit classroom block with changing rooms for nursery and primary pupils, as well as an additional two-unit classroom block for Junior High School students.
Other facilities will also be provided to create a conducive learning environment.
The MP described the ceremony as both symbolic and historic, stressing that it marked a significant step toward improving access to quality education in the municipality.

She noted that Kasoa, one of the country's largest municipalities, requires improved educational infrastructure to meet the needs of its residents. She also disclosed plans to expand the project into a secondary school in the future.
The MP further urged the contractor to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe and called on community members to support its successful execution.
The sod-cutting was jointly performed by the MP, the Director of Prisons in charge of Operations, the Municipal Education Director, the Officer-in-Charge of Awutu Camp Prison, CSP Catherine Mawunya Gagakuma, and traditional leaders.

In her closing remarks, CSP Catherine Mawunya Gagakuma expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and community members for their support. She assured that the Ghana Prisons Service remains committed to ensuring the project's successful completion.
The Assembly Member, Madam Irene, delivered the vote of thanks, after which the ceremony concluded with a closing Muslim prayer.
