Voting has ended in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, with sorting and counting of ballots currently underway at the Nima Cluster of Schools.
The election, held to select the party’s candidate for the March 3, 2026, by-election, was expected to have more than 1,100 delegates to cast their votes.
Polling began at 9:00 am and officially closed at 4:00 pm, after which electoral officials immediately commenced the counting process. The results are expected to be declared later today.
Five candidates are contesting for the nod to represent the party in the upcoming by-election, which was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure.
The aspirants are: Mohammed Ramne (Constituency Chairman), Hajia Amina Adam (widow of the late MP), Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed (High Commissioner to Nigeria), Dr Yakubu Azindow (Political Scientist), and Najib Mohammed Sani
A strong police presence has been deployed at the venue to maintain law and order as delegates and supporters remain on site, closely monitoring the sorting and counting process.
The primary is considered critical due to the NDC’s longstanding dominance in Ayawaso East, making the winner a strong favourite heading into the by-election.
Meanwhile, all five contenders have expressed optimism, with their supporters anticipating victory as the party awaits the outcome.
