A former Board Chairman of the National Communications Authority (NCA) who is standing trial for causing financial loss of $4 million to the state has asked the Chief Justice to transfer the case to a different judge.
Eugene Baffoe-Bonnie has accused Justice Eric Kyei Baffour of using unsavoury language on his counsel when the lawyer made an application on his behalf, adding that the judge asked the prosecution to “save the ink in their pens” rather than responding to the application.
According to Baffoe-Bonnie, the judge has displayed favouritism toward the prosecution and should not continue sitting on the case in his opinion.
He added that his application is also based on some video publication by US-based Ghanaian journalist Kevin Ekow Taylor.
He said Mr. Taylor made some “serious allegations against Justice Eric Kyei Baffour regarding the NCA case.”
He said these allegations can all be verified via an investigation.
The former Board Chairman is standing trial with William Tetteh Tevie, a former Director-General of the NCA; Nana Owusu Ensaw, a former board member; Alhaji Salifu Mimina Osman, a former Deputy National Security Coordinator, and a businessman, George Derek Oppong.
They are standing trial for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement of $4 million of state funds during the purchase of listening devices for the National Security, which was sponsored by the NCA.
The accused persons have been charged with diverse counts of wilfully causing financial loss of $4 million to the state, stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, among other charges.
They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges and are currently on bail in the sum of $1 million each.
