The second Berlinale Spotlight: Accra festival will run from 3rd to 7th September 2025 at the Goethe-Institut in Cantonments, offering evening screenings at 6.30 pm in the courtyard.
This comes after a successful inaugural edition in November 2024, which brought a curated selection of African films, including Abderrahmane Sissako’s Bamako and Timbuktu to audiences at UniMAC-IFT and the Goethe-Institut free of charge.
The 2024 event aimed to give Ghanaians access to African cinema that rarely screens locally and to bolster the presence of African filmmakers at the Berlinale international festival.
This year, The Falcon, a future cinema and cultural space based in Berekuso, is presenting nine of the thirteen African films that premiered at this year’s Berlinale. The selection includes debut feature films by alumni of Berlinale Talents, staying true to The Falcon’s mission of supporting new voices and building a dedicated space for independent cinema in Ghana.
Evening screenings aside, the festival will host two panel discussions organised by GIZ. COBALT, directed by Petna Ndaliko Katondolo (Congo), explores the intersection of mineral extraction and global capitalism. The Settlement, by Mohamed Rashad (Egypt), delves into child labour in precarious economies, both tackling urgent social issues without reducing them to despair.
Support from the Goethe-Institut Ghana, GIZ, the German Embassy, the Berlinale and Africa Film Festival Cologne has been vital in bringing this edition to life.
The festival continues the tradition begun in 2024 of showcasing powerful, independent African storytelling on Ghanaian soil.
Audiences can expect bold narratives and fresh perspectives that celebrate the diversity and creativity of cinema from across Africa and its Diaspora.
