Government is contemplating  a compensation package of ¢2 million to farmers whose birds have been infected with the bird flu virus.

Deputy Agric Minister Dr Hanna Bissew gave the hint, Wednesday in an interview with Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh.

Over 30,000 birds have been lost to the virus barely two months after the disease broke in Ghana.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Research confirmed the outbreak in May, 2015 after samples from two farms located in Achimota and Tema, and subjected them to medical scrutiny.

They tested positive to the avian flu virus.

Many dealers in poultry products have had their businesses badly affected by the outbreak.

In Obuasi in the Ashanti Region alone, more than 3000 birds were killed as a result of the virus.

There has since been a ban on the movement of live birds from one place to another.

Dr Hanna Bissew said there is a high possibility the disease will spread if live birds are carried from one place to another.

Acknowledging the financial drain the outbreak will have on the farmers, the Deputy Minister aid government is considering providing the farmers with some compensation but did not give details.

She said the government will soon announce the fine details once a final decision is taken.
