The debate on whether the name of Ghana’s International Airport should be maintained or renamed has turned an ideological warfare.
The debate is now been argued on the lines of the Convention People’s Party and the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC)which metamorphosed into the United Party(UP) after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah had left the UGCC to form the CPP. Whilst the pro CPP group and avowed Nkrumaist are calling for the renaming of the Airport, the pro UP group maintains the name Kotoka International Airport should remain unchanged.
The pro CPP group contends that Ghana should not hail a man who overthrew a democratically elected government by naming an important national monument like the airport which is the gateway to the country after him.
Speaking on Adom Dwaso Nsem with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Thursday, Osahene Boakye Djan, the number two man of the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) junta and an avowed Nkrumaist and a leading advocate for the renaming of the Kotoka International Airport said it is a mistake for Ghana to call itself a democratic country whilst its gateway is named after somebody who overthrew a constitutionally elected Government.
Lt. General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was a member of the National Liberation Council which overthrew Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on 24th February 1966.
Osahene Boakye Djan argues that Ghana’s International Airport should rather be named after Dr. Paa Grant, a founding member and bank roller of the UGCC because of his role in spearheading the struggle for the independence of Ghana and also as the only member of the Big Six of Ghana who has got no monument named after him.
Osahene Boakye Djan shares the same thought with Dr. Agyemang Badu Akosa, also an avowed Nkrumaist. Dr. Badu Akosa however wants the Kotoka International Airport to be named after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. His argument is that it is a slap on the face of Ghana’s Democracy to glorify coup makers.
However Nana Obiri Boahen, a former Minister of State at the Interior Ministry in the NPP government and also a UPst also on Adom Dwaso Nsem said he disagrees with those calling for Kotoka’s name to be scrapped from Ghana’s International Airport. He said Kotoka equally deserves to be honored since he forms part of Ghana’s history because he overthrew the autocratic government of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
