The Assemblyman for the Kandiga-Kurugu Electoral Area in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East region, Mr. Rudolf Amenga-Etego, has said plans were far advanced to set up an independent fund for the youth in the area to go into vegetable farming and guinea fowl rearing.
Speaking to the GNA at Kandiga in the Kasena-Nankana District, he expressed regret about the spate of migration of the youth from the area to the southern sector to do menial jobs where many of them were exposed to diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Amenga-Etego, who is also a Legal and Development Consultant, expressed optimism that the fund would help address the issue of rural-urban drift since many would be given the fund to either undertake vegetable farming or guinea fowl rearing.
He advised the youth to take advantage of the fund when it was ready to undertake such ventures.
Mr. Amenga-Etego commended the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) for the construction of a six-classroom block with library and toilet facilities for primary and Junior Secondary schools in the area and appealed to parents to send all children of school-going age to school.
He pledged to sponsor the first best six girls who performed very well at the Basic Education Certificate Examination to go to the senior secondary school.
He exhorted school children to take their education seriously by studying harder since it was the bedrock of development.
The Assemblyman indicated that with the collaboration of the Kassena-Nankana District Assembly, a community health post and nutrition centre had been provided and pleaded with the Assembly to equip the place with staff and the needed logistics.
He called on the Government to help provide potable water, desilt dams in the area and construct new ones for the people to go into farming, especially in the dry seasons.
