New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Bosomtwi, Simon Osei Mensah is advocating for a loan performance audit to check government spending.

According to him, Parliament as gate keepers must critically scrutinize any loan agreement by the executive to ensure there is value for money.

His comment comes after former Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia warned that, Ghana could go back to the era of Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC), due to the rising debts.

 Speaking at a lecture at the Prampram campus of the Central University College Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia said if Ghana goes HIPC, we might not get a relief from our development partners.

In support, Simon Osei Mensah on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, said in spite of the countless loans, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nothing to show for it.

He underscored the need for Parliament to control the expenditure of the executive to correct the lapses if it wants to remain relevant as the representatives of the people.

The Bosomtwi MP promised to file a motion on the floor of Parliament in the next sitting to start a debate.

He noted that the continuous rising public debt if not checked would be detrimental for economic growth.

“It is now evident that Ghana economy is suffering from diarrhea and government has no clue on how to stop it. The growth rate is just like a pendulum; it keeps moving up and down” he scoffed.

Simon Osei Mensah said Ghana could be a better place to live in if those in management positions started acting responsibly.

In a rebuttal, Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the picture being painted by Dr. Bawumia is not the true state of the economy.

He said despite the numerous challenges confronting the economy, government has put in place measures to stabilize it.

The Deputy Information Minister stated that as a social democratic government committed to rapidly accelerating the development of the country, it is only natural it might over spend its budget.

He said being financially indiscipline is not peculiar to the NDC because the NPP while in government did worst.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu said suggestions that government has not done anything with the loans it took is factuality inaccurate because the completed and ongoing infrastructural projects across the country is very visible for all to see.
