Veteran sports journalist Karl Tufouh has revealed that former Ghana coach Bukhard Ziese confided in him and other journalists plans to replace ex-Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah as skipper of the team before he was fired.
The Black Stars inability to win the 1992 Afcon has been attributed in part to division within the team caused by the appointment of Abedi Pele as skipper. Abedi replaced Kwesi Appiah as skipper under coach Otto Phister before the start of the tournament but Karl Tufour says plans to make Abedi captain were mooted before the appointment of Otto Phister.
According to Karl Tufuoh, then coach Bukhard Ziese revealed to him and others his intention to replace Kwesi Appiah as Black Stars captain.
“Myself, Christian Abbiw, Papa Paintsil, Kwabena Agyepong and Dr. Engman, Bukhard Ziese had revealed to us that he was going to change the captain and he put the FA in the know. And the reason that he gave us which he didn’t tell the FA was that he could not guarantee Kwesi Appiah a starting role.”
The Kwesi Appiah-Abedi Pele captaincy controversy is often pointed to as a major reason for Ghana’s failure to win the ultimate at the ’92 Afcon.
Karl Tufuoh made the revelation in the Rewind series which airs on Joy News at 4pm on Saturday.
