The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah, has appeal to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), a subsidiary of the Volta River Authority (VRA) to spare Bunkpurugu-Yonyon and its environs the current load shedding to avert more clashes in the area.
According to him, if continuous power is restored to the area, it will discourage nightly clashes between feuding parties.
DCOP Ken Yeboah made the appeal to NEDCo during an interview with Adom FM Evening News on Monday.
DCOP Ken Yeboah’s plea follows the death of a 70-year old man who lost his life in renewed ethnic violence in the Northern regional town of Bunkrugu last Sunday.
The sudden death of the man brings the death toll to three following clashes between the Jafouk and Jamong factions.
After a power cut to the area last Sunday, one group began firing shots and burning homes.
The Regional Minister was compelled to call the Northern Electricity Department to restore power.
The Bunkprugu-Yunyoo Township was placed under a 15-hour curfew by the Interior Ministry after a similar violence in April this year.
DCOP Yeboah says he is surprised that despite the curfew violence still erupted.
Initial reports suggested that the situation was getting out of control as the gun battle between the residents kept aggravating, however DCOP Yeboah says the police is on top of the situation now.
He added that the situation is currently under control but to quell further clashes, police will intensify the curfew.
