Former Minister for Defence, Benjamin Kumbuor says the ability of many Ghanaians in the Northern part of the country to use electrical appliances is an everlasting testament to the former President’s leadership.
According to him, had it not been for the forceful insistence of then-President Jerry John Rawlings for the national grid to be extended to the Northern sector of the country, much of the north would have been without electricity.
“There was no way but for the passion of Jerry John Rawlings that the national grid of electricity could have gone to the North. It was impossible.”
Benjamin Kumbuor speaking to JoyNews said the late former President had threatened engineers to either find a way to link the northern regions to the national grid or resign.
“He threatened engineers that if that was not possible they should resign; he would get another engineer to do that. And it was done. We’re here enjoying it and the Akosombo has not dried up.”
He also attributed Ghana’s longstanding stable democratic status to the late former President.
According to him, had the former President not couched the 1992 constitution in the way and manner in which it was done including adding the indemnity clause, Ghana’s 4th Republic would have possibly be short-lived.
“Why is it that this is the only constitution that has survived 27 years? Is it not indeed the case that it was a political document well-negotiated which brought everybody on board?” he quizzed.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings, unfortunately, passed away on the morning of Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital following a short illness.
Owing to the impact of his political career on the nation, politicians from both sides of the political divide have thronged the house of the former President to extend their condolences to the wife and family of the late president.
