Officials of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) have confirmed the seizure of large quantity of cannabis at the Aviance Cargo Village, near the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
There were 230 parcels, including 192 slabs of compressed cannabis, 40 bowls containing cannabis paste and eight cylindrical containers also containing cannabis paste.
The haul weighing 664 kilograms with a street value of 3.9 million pounds, was being prepared for export to the United Kingdom.
CEPS Chief Collector Investigations at the Airport, Nana Egyin Buadu, told Joy News they were overwhelmed by the quantity of the cannabis.
“It was our officers who upon suspicion of the movement of a vehicle passing by which made them suspicious that the parcels or the packages brought for examination could be something else so they gave it a proper examination.”
He noted that his outfit is cooperating with all relevant agencies and would soon hand over the case to the Narcotics Control Board for further investigations.
Mr. Boadu said they were not surprised at the discovery, which does not also mean that drug cases in Ghana is high or low, “it is normal…except that the quantity involved is a bit on a high side.”
There has not been any arrest yet. Available information indicate that even though the owner of the parcels was available during the examination, he managed to sneak out.
