Executive Director at Toptech Transport & Logistics, Cecil Garbrah has called for the installation of speed limiters in all vehicles, especially, commercial buses as a way of tackling road accidents in the country.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Monday, August 16, 2021, Garbrah noted that most road accidents occur as a result of over speeding, thus, addressing this anomaly will significantly reduce the phenomenon.
"Higher speed leads to a greater risk of a crash and a greater probability of serious injuries if one occurs, so we need to look at it," he said.
The comment was part of discussions on the way forward to curbing road accidents in the country, following data released by the Ghana Police Service that over 1,706 people have lost their lives through road accidents from January to July 2021.
Speaking on the show, Cecil Garbrah blamed the high number of road accidents recorded on the failure of relevant stakeholders and authorities in charge to implement major road regulations as well as lack of discipline on our roads.
He, therefore, called on the National Road Safety Authority to strictly enforce all road traffic regulations. He cited for instance, that regulation 135 of the Road Traffic Regulations should be strictly enforced.
"The DVLA and NRSA should come together and put a speed limiter that when you accelerate up to 70km- 80km per hour because you're carrying a lot of passengers or goods, your vehicle cannot go beyond that 80km per hour," he said.
Also, he called for discipline on the roads, insisting that drivers must comply with all road traffic regulations and refrain from activities that can lead to accidents such as over speeding and using mobile phones while driving.
