A road accident at Kwashieman in Accra has left several individuals feared dead after a passenger bus collided with a truck in the early hours of Friday, April 3.
The crash occurred around 4 a.m., involving a Grand Bird bus travelling from Takoradi to Sowutuom.
Eyewitnesses report that the bus attempted a turn at the Kwashieman traffic light just as a truck loaded with onions approached the intersection from Lapaz, bound for the Kasoa stretch.
Preliminary accounts suggest that the truck was proceeding through an amber light when the bus driver executed the turn.
Despite repeated horn signals from the truck driver, the two vehicles collided with significant force. The impact caused the truck to veer off its intended path, tragically striking pedestrians who had gathered at the traffic light.
Bystanders described the scene as catastrophic, with widespread panic resulting from the scale of damage and injuries. Many of the bus passengers were reportedly on their way to attend a Convention.
Police have confirmed that the severity of the collision has made it challenging to determine the exact number of casualties at this stage. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
Authorities have urged both motorists and pedestrians to exercise heightened caution, particularly at heavily trafficked intersections, and have reiterated the need to adhere to traffic signals to prevent such tragedies.
