The ongoing population and housing census (PHC) exercise has been hit with series of accusations.Various reports monitored on Adom Fm from the regions indicate that the exercise has witnessed various shortcomings ranging from non-availability of census materials and politicization.Adom correspondents in the various districts reports that as at 7am Monday morning people were apprehensive that enumerators had not visited their homes for the exercise even though the exercise officially commenced on Sunday.Patrons of hotels, pubs and travelers are among those who spoke to Adom Fm and expressed concern about the exercise.Their fears were that as at Sunday night they had not sighted census officials at their reveling places.Census enumerators as part of the census exercise were scheduled to visit hotels, guest houses, lorry stations, the airports, drinking and entertainment centers to count such patrons who are considered as the floating population. There were also reports of politicization of the exercise by some political parties.A former District Chief Executive in the Central Region has been accused of inciting his party members not to offer themselves for counting on grounds that only party members of the ruling government were appointed as enumerators.Counting of Ghana’s population began on Sunday with spontaneous fireworks, bonfires, blowing of sirens and ringing of church bells.About 50,000 enumerators are taking part in the two-week exercise which has the slogan “You Count, so be Counted”.The exercise is to measure the accurate size of Ghana’s population which has been estimated at 25million.The census will also provide relevant demographic data that will enhance Ghana’s development planning.Source: Kojo Addo/Adom FM/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
