The Customs, Excise and Preventive Services (CEPS) is unhappy about the flagrant abuse by local importers of the transit regime, instituted to help land-locked countries, to amass wealth and evade tax. The regime waives taxes on imports to landlocked countries such as Mali and Niger. However, some Ghanaian exporters have taken advantage of the facility to import goods for such landlocked countries and then re-import them back into the country and sell. Addressing members of the Tema Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry at their monthly meeting, Mr. Samuel A.H. Yankyera reiterated the Service's determination to ensure that it dealt with those importers who engage in the act. He appealed to the members of the Chamber who are engaged in import and export activities to comply with the various regulations voluntarily so as not to fall foul of the law. In a related development, the Ghana Business Coalition Against HIV/AIDS (BBCA), a private sector contribution towards the elimination of AIDS, gave a powerpoint presentation to members of the Tema Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the objective of improving HIV / AIDS workplace intervention.
