Officials of China Geo Engineering Corporation have covered a deep trench in which three boys drowned at the Sofoline Interchange project site in Kumasi.
The closure was ordered by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah following last weekend’s tragedy.
The youngsters, aged between 11 and 16 fell and died in the trench as they attempted to wash themselves after a football game at the Kwadaso underpass.
Residents have blamed the construction company for the death of the three boys, because it had failed to put up danger signs to warn the public.
After leading the Regional Security Council to visit the tragic scene and bereaved families, Dr. Agyemang-Mensah ordered the trench be covered.
When Nhyira News visited the site, the Chinese contractor had covered the trench, leaving only few traces of water there.
Public Relations Officer at the Regional Coordinating Council, Francis Dodovi tells Nhyira Fm the Regional Minister is enthused about the quick response.
“The Honorable Regional Minister is very happy that his directive has been followed; as you can see the trench in which the three youngsters drowned has been covered so his instructions have been duly followed”.
The contractor has also erected warning signs to ward-off any further tragedy on site. This include red ribbons, sign boards among others.
Dr. Agyemang-Mensah has also directed officials of the Department of Urban Roads to ensure safety of all road users at ongoing road construction sites in the region.
Meanwhile, the Regional Minister has expressed worry about difficulties motorists face as they access roads under construction in the Ashanti region.
He said he will direct consultants on such projects to ensure safety of people who enter project areas.
