The Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Ms Lauretta Vivian Lamptey says she is ready to relinquish her membership of the board of the Ghana Commercial Bank(GCB). Ms Lamptey however says her decision to quit the GCB board has nothing to do with a legal suit challenging the constitutionality of her holding the post along with her status as the commissioner of the Human Rights body. The suit has been initiated by the Center for National Affairs, an advocacy group at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Ms Lamptey has consistently defended the appointments, explaining they cannot amount to a breach of the constitutional provision of Article 222 which prohibits a commissioner of CHRAJ from occupying any other public office. In an interview with Joy News Wednesday, Ms Lamptey revealed that her decision to quit as a member of the GCB board is not a sudden one but dates as far back as August, 2011 when she was sworn in as Commissioner. She said that she arrived at that decision due to the commitments attached to her new post and not because there is a law barring a Commissioner from holding a public office. The CHRAJ Commissioner added that from her consultations she has been told that board membership does not constitute a public office.
