The Christian Council of Ghana has strongly advised government agencies to beware of foreign donors who set acceptance of homosexuality as a condition for donations and supports.

“Nobody should gradually find a nice way of pushing same sex unions into our academic institutions,” the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong stated.

Speaking to Joy News Thursday, he  stated that same sex marriage cannot be part of the definition of marriage in the Bible.

His caution reveals undercurrent of concern that western countries favourable to same-sex unions could push through gay rights by tying it up to donor support.

In 2010, donors and development partners within the Multi-Donor Budget Support (MDBS) provided just over US$ 400 million to the national budget of Ghana.

Donors have had cause to withhold support to Ghana's economy for economic reasons. It witheld direct budgetary support worth US$700million between 2012 and 2014 in response to the government's large spending overruns and the inability of some ministries to meet conditions for disbursement.

Already controversy over the church's position on homosexuality has reportedly resulted in the resignation of a former Moderator of the Presby Church of Ghana.

The Christian Council is backing the Presbyterian Church of Ghana's decision to break their relationship with pro-homosexual Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.

“For us at the Christian Council of Ghana, same sex marriage is unbiblical, is unchristian, and is unafrican,” Rev told Joy News.

The Moderator of the Presby Church Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey vowed that the Presbyterian Church in Ghana will never accept gay rights because it is a total “deviation from Bible principles.”

The immediate past Moderator of PCG, Rev. Dr. Frimpong Manso had a two-year duty stay in the U.S which expired last year but he still remained in the US.

Rev. Dr. Yaw Frimpong Manso resigned from the church after the PCG gave a December 31, ultimatum to return home.

The standoff between Rev. Frimpong Manso and the Presby Church in Ghana's is believed to be connected to the dispute over gay rights.

The Church in the US is reported to have blessed gay marriage but the Church in Ghana is vehemently opposed to this.

Rev. Opuni Frimpong said the council is ready to intervene in the issue between the PCG and the Immediate Past Moderator if the church calls for it.

“We are with them in prayers and we know the PCG can solve this but if need arises, the council is ready to support,” he stated.
