Former Black Stars captain Charles Kwablan Akunnor has questioned the timing for goalkeeper Richard Kingson’s re-call in to the national team.
The veteran goalkeeper who now plays for Cypriot side Doxa Katokopia has been missing from the Black Stars in the last two years due to his then inactivity.
Kingson is now a part of Coach Kwasi Appiah’s preparations for Ghana’s crucial world cup first leg qualifier against the Pharaohs of Egypt onOctober 15, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
However, former Ghana international C. K. Akunnor who played alongside Kingson in the national team says he “would have wished that Richard Kingson be re-drafted after Ghana had qualified for the 2014 world cup in Brazil.”
He adds “Kingson’s invitation is a laudable gesture, don’t get me wrong. I am just worried about the timing. Kingson is a big name in this country as far as goalkeeping in concerned. Now that you’ve called him, will you play him or keep him on the bench?
"If you keep him on the bench, it will put pressure on Fatau Dauda or whoever will start. If he should play, that will be fine because he has a lot of experience, and that will help us a lot. But I would have thought that after we’ve qualified then he comes in and then with his rich experience, he helps the young ones and the other guys as well.”
CK Akunnor had 51 caps for the Black Stars with a goal to his credit.
