Dabokpa Technical Institute in Tamale has emerged fourth in the grand finale of the 2025 SHS Renewable Energy Challenge, impressing judges and audiences with a powerful presentation and a groundbreaking innovation aimed at saving newborn lives.
The team’s project, dubbed the “Intelligent Baby Incubator” (IBI V1), is a solar-powered medical device designed to keep premature babies safe during power outages, a common challenge in many rural health facilities across Ghana.
Beginning their presentation with an emotional appeal, “Imagine a mother’s relief knowing a premature baby is safe even when the city lights go out…” — the students captured the hearts of the audience, highlighting how unreliable electricity threatens the lives of newborns in underserved communities.
They explained that their IBI V1 incubator provides a sustainable, off-grid solution to neonatal care by harnessing solar energy, ensuring that babies can receive uninterrupted warmth and monitoring even in areas without a stable power supply.
The judges praised the team for addressing a critical healthcare gap with a renewable energy solution that blends technology, empathy, and innovation.
For their achievement, Dabokpa Technical Institute received a total package worth ₵42,000, which included 25 LED street lights, 10 Integrated Science books, two skeletal systems, a plaque, ₵3,000 cash reward, five Android phones, six solar lamps, certificates, souvenirs, and an additional ₵5,000 cash prize.
