Motorists plying the Adomi Bridge, serving the Eastern and Volta Regions have been asked to cooperate with the Ghana Highway Authority as it undertakes about two months repair works on the bridge. The Director of Bridges, Ghana Highway Authority, Mr. Peter Dagadu told Joy news that starting from tomorrow, Saturday, daily access to the bridge would be restricted from 9am to 12pm. “We are closing the bridge between 9am and 12pm. There are two alternative routes: you either go through Juapong, Volu, Adidome and Sogakope or the second route; Ho, Denu and Sogakope,” Mr. Dagadu said. “Basically,” he explained, “we are going to do welding…But if we are under the bridge and we detect something else, it would be rectified immediately.” The need for immediate patch is considered necessary to safe the bridge from total collapse. The Ghana Highway Authority has already started enforcing a load restriction policy on the Bridge and motorists would also be prevented from parking on it. The Bridge is a major means of transportation connecting most towns and villages between the Eastern Region and the Volta Region. Joy fm’s Agbeko Ben Cofie reporting from the Bridge said it is the most popular and convenient bridge connecting the Volta and Eastern regions. Drivers being asked to use alternative routes are complaining that they are not too sure about the alternative roads mentioned by the Director of Bridges. Describing the situation as “very serious” he said one of the two steel beams supporting the concrete of the bridge is broken into two with the other hanging loosely. The concrete is also gradually chipping off into the Volta River that runs under it. “I don’t think we have to wait till tomorrow from what I see here…” Agbeko Ben Cofie cautioned. The Adomi Bridge was constructed in1956 by Norman Long Bridge Engineers Limited and Halcrow & Partners. It has over the years seen an average daily of over 120,000 people; pedestrians, commuters, traders, workers and tourists alike. It was commissioned by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, then Head of Government Business together with Sir Charles Noble Arden Clark on January 25, 1957.
