Upper West Regional Minister Dr Hafiz Bin Salih has inaugurated a five-member committee to look into the death of a two-year-old boy at the old Upper West Regional Hospital on Saturday. This follows allegations that staff of the Hospital’s negligence caused the death of Ibrahim Shahid who was bitten by a snake and was rushed there for treatment. According to his family, his folder was not found because the personnel in charge of the Folder Unit of the hospital had closed. They allege that he was left unattended to for a long time leading to his death. The Minister tasked members of the committee to do a thorough to get to the bottom of the issue. “Your work will define the health situation of the Upper West region," he said. The committee is headed by Issaaka Alhassan, a retired deputy director of nursing at the Regional Hospital. He will be assisted by, detective corporal Richman Ayittey of the Upper West Police CID; Aseidu Nimako, who is with the Attorney General’s Department in the Upper West region; Alfred Anzagrah, a Ghana Health Service staff and Abdul Gafur Yakubu, a journalist. The terms of reference of the committee include investigating whether or not the staff of the hospital are culpable of the allegations levelled against them and to investigate the readiness of the outpatient department to admit and take care of a large number of patients that visit the facility daily. It also includes investigating the hospital's readiness to deal with snakebites and the availability of anti-snake serum. They are to make recommendations on strategies that can be developed at the emergency unit to make ready to deliver the services that are required. The five-member committee will recommend steps that should be employed to restore the reputation of the facility in particular and the health sector in the region as a whole. Finally, they are to recommend sanctions, that should be meted out to anyone found culpable in the incident which led to the death of the two-year-old. Meanwhile, Chairman of the committee, Issaaka Alhassan, has assured the media that his outfit will work to justify the confidence reposed in them. The committee has a deadline of November 26, to present its report.
