A 22-year-old mechanic has been remanded in prison custody for posing as a soldier and duping five people of GH¢9,450 under the pretext of getting them enlisted in the Ghana Police Service.
Ebenezer Asamoah Baffour, the mechanic is charged with defrauding by false pretense and impersonation.
He pleaded not guilty and will appear again on July 18.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector James Amekah told the court, presided over by Mr. D.W.P. Amediour that in May 2011, a pastor of the victims introduced Baffour to them as a soldier who could assist them to be enlisted into the police service.
Consequently, Baffour during discussions with the victims namely; Frank Akwasi Anning, Portia Acheampong, Regina Fowaah, Solomon Mensah and Kwaku Boafo confirmed what the pastor had said.
He, therefore, collected GH¢2000 from Anning, GH¢2000 from Portia, GH¢2,500 from Regina, GH¢1750 from Mensah, and GH¢1200 from Boafo and promised to secure them enlistment into the police service.
Baffour could, however, not fulfill his promise and so the victims became suspicious.
They investigated and discovered that Baffour, who had been introduced by a church pastor as a military officer at the Four Infantry Battalion, was rather a mechanic at Bohyen, who had bolted with their monies.
C/Insp. Ameka told the court that Boafo later spotted Baffour at Bohyen on July 5, and caused his arrest.
He was handed over to the Tafo/Pankro no Police command subsequently.
