The President of Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong has called for the pulling down of structures on waterways to prevent flooding in the nation’s capital.Nana Dwomoh Sarpong noted that constructing big gutters in water logged areas will not solve the flooding, but pulling down structures on water ways will help solve perennial flooding in the country.Nana Dwomoh Sarpong was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Friday in the wake of the heavy downpour on Tuesday night through to Wednesday morning in Accra, which claimed at least nine lives.Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, who has been advocating for the protection of the environment for over two decades, called on law enforcement agencies to ensure strict adherence on laws that ban people from building on waterways. He noted that aftermath of flooding causes communicable diseases and affects the working class as well as children.Meanwhile, the President of the Association of Building and Civil Engineers of Ghana, Edward Amaonor has attributed the perennial flooding in the country to lack of proper planning in the cities. In a related development, the Accra Metropolitan Health Directorate has warned of an imminent cholera outbreak following last Wednesday's floods.According to the AMA there was “real danger of a reversal to the cholera outbreak which plagued the city”.
