Authorities and students of Kumasi Girls Senior High School can now heave a sigh of relief following the completion and hand-over of a new dining hall by the contractor. The project which was started 12 years ago had been abandoned for a long time until recent intervention by government.Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah who first broke the news on the plight of students has been monitoring progress of work, and reports that what remains now are furniture and electricity. The over 1,900 students were compelled to eat in the open in batches, due to the absence of a dining hall. This often disrupted academic work as students spent longer time having their meals than usual.Workers of Jofa Construction, the executing contractor, returned to site a few days after Nhyira News carried the first report. Now despite lack of furniture and power, school authorities are happy they can use the facility. The school is expected to admit more than 500 new students into Form One this year, and they will not go through the ordeal their seniors had suffered.Headmistress, Mary Krah-Ampofo is delighted at the development which she acknowledges is the outcome of positive journalism. She believes her efforts would have been in vain if not complemented by that of the Multimedia Group which made follow-ups on the progress of work on the project.“When the report came out, he came out to work for us. Through the efforts of the journalist and the contractor himself, the work has been completed”, she stated.Ms. Krah-Ampofo believes even in the absence of furniture and electricity, the school has no option than to use the facility.“What is left now is for the consultant to work hard to get us furniture. What we are using now were manufactured about fifteen years ago and needs replacement”.
