Leader of the National Democratic Congress’ Caucus in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to pay particular attention to corrupt heads of public institutions just as much as he does political officeholders.
According to him, whereas political office holders have faced the brunt of corruption probes and prosecutions, heads of public institutions have gone largely unscathed.
“Chief Directors and Chief Executives are left as if they don’t [engage in corruption]. Some of them do, and there is evidence. The focus should not only be on petty corruption where you see a policeman stop a trotro driver,” the Minority Leader said on the floor of Parliament, July 30, before the House approved of Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has called for a review of the laws governing the Special Prosecutor’s office to empower the Special Prosecutor in the execution of his mandate.
He stated that this is to prevent the Special Prosecutor from becoming a “toothless bulldog who can only bark but will not be able to bite.”
The House on Friday approved Mr Agyebeng after a report of Parliament’s Appointment Committee recommended same.
“The committee has duly recommended the nominee of the President for the appointment of the Special Prosecutor in line with the Section 13 (3) and (8) of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 and the standing orders of Parliament and recommends the nominee Mr Kissi Agyebeng to the House for approval.”
Once he is sworn in by President Akufo-Addo, the 43-year-old succeeds Martin Amidu, the first special prosecutor.
